After seeing rookies like CJ Stroud and Justin Herbert excel right away, fans in Denver had high hopes for Bo Nix in 2024.
However, despite his imperfections, he remains the best option for leading the Broncos onto the field, as the team lacks any viable alternatives with more upside during this developmental season. On paper, Nix has been one of the least effective quarterbacks in the NFL so far, alongside recently benched Panthers quarterback Bryce Young.
He’s tied for the league lead with four interceptions, hasn’t thrown a touchdown, and while he has shown some ability to move the ball—completing 46 of 77 passes for 384 yards—he’s been sacked four times and has a QBR of 35.7. Unfortunately, the Broncos don’t have the necessary support system to improve significantly over the coming months.
Should the Broncos consider switching to a veteran to salvage the season and allow Nix to learn from the sidelines? That’s the approach the Panthers are taking with Young, but the Broncos lack a reliable backup like Andy Dalton, who has a proven track record in the NFL.
What about signing a veteran like Ryan Tannehill? Does he really make a difference in such a challenging division, especially with a 0-2 start and no time to prepare?
At this point, sticking with Nix isn’t just the best choice for the Broncos; it might be their only option for turning things around.
Realistically, many expected the Broncos to struggle this year, and starting the sixth quarterback taken in the 2024 draft would be a process. For the franchise’s future, giving as many snaps as possible to Nix could be beneficial. Best case, he develops into a long-term player; worst case, the team loses and can target a new quarterback like Cam Ward or Carson Beck in the future.
