The Los Angeles Lakers’ rumored interest in acquiring a center underscores their ongoing effort to optimize their roster around Anthony Davis.
While Davis has thrived at center in stretches, the team appears eager to allow him to shift back to his preferred power forward role by adding a reliable defensive and rebounding presence in the frontcourt.
Walker Kessler has been a target for much of the season, but reports suggest that Utah Jazz executive Danny Ainge is hesitant to part with the young big man.
As a result, the Lakers may be turning their attention to Brooklyn Nets center Nic Claxton, a 25-year-old defensive standout who could address their needs more comprehensively.
Claxton has been a force in recent seasons, averaging 12.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game over the last three years. His 2022-23 campaign, where he averaged 2.5 blocks and earned Defensive Player of the Year consideration, highlights his ability to anchor a defense.
For the Lakers, Claxton could either start at center, allowing Davis more freedom to roam, or serve as a high-impact reserve.
However, acquiring Claxton would require a significant trade package. The Lakers would likely need to offer D’Angelo Russell along with Jarred Vanderbilt or Gabe Vincent to match salaries.
Additionally, they would need to include draft capital, such as the 2025 Clippers’ second-round pick and a protected first-rounder, to entice the rebuilding Nets.
While costly, Claxton’s shot-blocking, rebounding, and overall defensive prowess could make him a transformative addition for the Lakers, bolstering their championship aspirations in a competitive Western Conference.
