Deserving Promotion: Rising Lions Assistant And Defensive coordinator Dubbed As Future NFL Coaching Candidate. Set To Leave For Head Coaching Job After The Season.

The Detroit Lions’ coaching staff continues to garner attention as the next NFL head coaching hiring cycle approaches, with multiple assistants emerging as potential candidates for promotions.

Ben Johnson: Top Head Coaching Candidate

Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson will again be a sought-after candidate for head coaching jobs. Johnson, 37, has transformed Detroit’s offense into one of the NFL’s best, showcasing creativity and adaptability. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Johnson is not necessarily waiting for the “perfect” opportunity but wants a role with organizational alignment and long-term potential. If those conditions aren’t met, he’s content to stay in Detroit, where he enjoys his role and the team’s trajectory.

Aaron Glenn: Strong Contender

Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is also expected to be in demand for head coaching interviews. Glenn has steadily improved Detroit’s defense and earned multiple interviews last offseason. Some view him as potentially more likely than Johnson to leave, given his growing reputation and the increasing diversity in head coaching hires.

Tanner Engstrand: A Rising Star

Another name to watch is Tanner Engstrand, Detroit’s passing game coordinator. The 42-year-old has climbed the coaching ladder with the Lions, starting as an offensive assistant in 2020 before taking on his current role. He is viewed as a future head coaching candidate, having already interviewed for three offensive coordinator openings (New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, Tampa Bay Buccaneers) after last season.

Engstrand’s Background:

  • College quarterback at San Diego State
  • Coaching resume includes a long stint at the University of San Diego, where he served as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterbacks coach from 2011-2017.
  • Worked as an offensive analyst at the University of Michigan (2018) and as offensive coordinator for the DC Defenders (XFL) (2020).

Engstrand’s stock is rising quickly, and if Johnson departs for a head coaching job, Engstrand could be a natural replacement as the Lions’ offensive coordinator. Alternatively, Johnson may take Engstrand with him, or other teams could approach Engstrand for offensive coordinator roles.

Lions’ Coaching Pipeline

Detroit has built a strong coaching pipeline under head coach Dan Campbell, with several assistants now viewed as prime candidates for advancement. The Lions’ success on the field has spotlighted their coaching talent, ensuring this will be an offseason where Detroit’s staff plays a significant role in league-wide hiring decisions.
