Cody Bellinger has revitalized his career with the Chicago Cubs after struggling during his final years with the Los Angeles Dodgers. This resurgence has sparked speculation about whether he’ll use his opt-out clause for the 2025 season and explore free agency.
Bellinger has the option to enter free agency either this offseason or next. His three-year, $80 million contract with the Cubs, signed last winter, includes player options for 2025 and 2026. The Cubs are hoping he stays, as replacing his production and versatility would be difficult. Fortunately for the team, Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly predicts that Bellinger will choose to stay and collect his $27.5 million salary for the 2025 season, believing the 29-year-old will stick with Chicago for at least another year.
Kelly also notes that if Bellinger opts to test the market, he wouldn’t have a qualifying offer attached to him, meaning the Cubs wouldn’t receive compensation if he signs elsewhere. Additionally, the team would still owe him $2.5 million if he opts out, making his departure even more unfavorable for Chicago.
While Bellinger had a solid 2024 season, he didn’t quite reach the level of his previous year’s performance, hitting .266/.325/.426 with 18 home runs, 78 RBIs, and nine stolen bases in 516 at-bats. Kelly suggests that if Bellinger returns to his 2023 form, he could command a larger contract next offseason.
How Bellinger decides to move forward will significantly affect the Cubs’ short- and long-term plans. Cubs President Jed Hoyer and the front office are likely hoping that Bellinger chooses to stay.
