The NFL trade deadline is approaching, and teams are already making moves. In the AFC East, both the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills have bolstered their rosters with new wide receivers.
As the deadline looms, should the Washington Commanders get involved? The answer is a clear yes—they should be active in the trade market. Unlike past seasons, where the Commanders might have been sellers, this year presents an opportunity for them to buy. With a solid 4-2 start, the team has shown immense potential and should look to add talent to strengthen their roster.
But what major move should they consider? While adding another dynamic offensive weapon for rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels would be ideal, it may not be feasible. Brandon Aiyuk is off the market after re-signing with the 49ers, and both Davante Brown and Amari Cooper have already been traded. With the wide receiver market thinning, it might be wiser for Washington to wait until the offseason to make significant upgrades at the position.
The Commanders’ Week 6 loss to the Baltimore Ravens (30-23) at M&T Bank Stadium was costly in more ways than one. On Monday, head coach Dan Quinn confirmed that star defensive tackle Jonathan Allen tore his pectoral muscle, ending his season. At 29, Allen is the longest-tenured player on the team, having been drafted in the first round in 2017. He’s been a key leader and a durable presence on the field, missing no more than two games in the past six seasons.
Allen’s injury leaves a significant gap in the defense. Daron Payne will need to take on a larger role, while younger players like Phidarian Mathis and rookie Johnny Newton will also have to step up. Though Allen hasn’t officially been placed on injured reserve, the move seems inevitable.
