As was covered on the previous week’s episode of The Play By Play podcast, the FX series has received mixed reviews thus far. Some are worried about how it handles CTE and Hernandez’s alleged homosexuality.

A common amusement among football enthusiasts has been the portrayal of some of Hernandez’s most prominent teammates and coaches. Tony Yazbeck portrays Florida coach Urban Meyer, Patrick Schwarzenegger plays Tim Tebow, Hernandez’s college teammate, and Norbert Leo Butz plays Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

According to Jacobson, “even though the people weren’t as well-known, we felt like we had a lot of human drama.” However, we also experienced a great deal of pressure to perform well or not at all since we were aware of how sports fans saw some of these more well-known personalities. We weren’t going to include Tom Brady merely for the sake of including him if there wasn’t going to be a significant plot with one of his characters.

“I think for a lot of people, Bill Belichick and Urban Meyer are insanely famous, but Nina’s a much bigger sports fan than I am,” Simpson continued. “The teams themselves, in my opinion, are the true centre of renown here:

“The teams themselves—the Florida Gators and the New England Patriots—are, in my opinion, the true centre of fame here. These are enormous establishments that draw crazy crowds.
