John Oliver created one of the standout moments of the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday by delivering a heartfelt tribute to his recently deceased dog, despite efforts by the organizers to cut him off.
While accepting the award for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, the host of *Last Week Tonight with John Oliver*, 47, took a moment to honor his late pet.
“We had the most fantastic dog,” the U.K.-born HBO host said.
As the producers attempted to play him off with music to signal the end of his speech, Oliver continued with his emotional tribute.
“Perfect choice of music! We had to say goodbye to her,” Oliver said, directing a blunt “F**k you!” at the musical director for the interruption. He added, “I feel like Sarah McLachlan right now.”
He continued, “She was an amazing dog, and this isn’t just for her. It’s for all dogs! All dogs. You’re very good girls, very good boys. You all deserve a treat.” At that point, Oliver, a 30-time Emmy winner, concluded his speech with, “Play me off now!”
Another fan found Oliver’s speech both “hilarious and so sad,” expressing sympathy for his loss.
One person reflected, “I don’t know what’s more iconic – John Oliver thanking his late dog during his acceptance speech or being able to reverse the Emmy’s playoff music by talking about his dog.”
Another user commented, “I’m crying. John Oliver dedicated his Emmy to his dog who just passed away, and all the girl and boy dogs out there – says give them a treat!”
John Oliver wins an Emmy. He starts to thank his dog, who recently died, and they start playing him off stage, which he did not appreciate.”
