Monday was a notable day for the New York Mets’ transactions, with the Boston Red Sox playing a significant role.
The Red Sox executed a rare September trade, sending 34-year-old minor league veteran Eddy Alvarez to the Mets in exchange for cash considerations. Alvarez, who has played 114 games in Triple-A for Boston this season, is getting another chance in the majors.
To make space for Alvarez on their active roster, the Mets needed to clear a spot on their 40-man roster. They achieved this by designating utility infielder Pablo Reyes for assignment. According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, Reyes, 30, was the player moved to make room for Alvarez. Reyes had appeared in 85 games for the Red Sox from 2023 to 2024.
Last season, Reyes was one of the few highlights for a Red Sox team that ended up in last place. Initially picked up from the struggling Oakland Athletics’ minor league system, Reyes made a significant impact for Boston, including a memorable walk-off grand slam.
However, after a rough start to the 2024 season, Reyes was released by the Red Sox at the end of April. The Mets signed him, and he spent most of this season with Triple-A Syracuse before being recalled when rosters expanded.
Reyes’ brief stint with the Mets included just one game, where he did not bat but scored a run as a pinch-runner in a 2-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox on September 1.
Now, Reyes finds himself once again striving to maintain his major league aspirations. Regardless of what happens next, his time with the Red Sox in 2023 will remain a high point in his career.
