Top free agents signed with their new teams months ago, and with training camp still over three weeks away, news is usually sparse. However, Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving provided a bit of excitement on Wednesday night by joining a Twitch stream to discuss his life and basketball.
Irving is determined to return to the NBA Finals and acknowledged his role in not performing at his best previously. While most recent news about the Mavericks has centered on Irving, there is also movement involving a familiar face from last season.
Former Mavericks forward Alex Fudge, who was waived by Dallas as part of the Kessler Edwards trade, has signed a two-way deal with the Los Angeles Lakers. Fudge, who had a two-way contract with Dallas last season, is now back with the Lakers.
This signing comes less than a month before training camp starts, and other deals across the league may follow in the coming weeks. Compared to many other NBA moves, this one is relatively late, and Fudge will have to prove himself with the Lakers.
Fudge previously played for the Lakers before joining the Mavericks last season. With the Lakers boasting a deep roster, he’ll need to compete hard for a roster spot during training camp.
However, he didn’t get many opportunities with the Mavericks and spent most of his time in the G League. Known for his defensive skills, his offensive game still needs development.
Fudge had a chance to showcase his abilities during the Summer League but struggled, averaging just 4.6 points per game and shooting 12.5% from three-point range. Given his difficulties, it seems a change was beneficial for both him and the Mavericks, as Dallas needs wings who can consistently hit open shots, an area where Fudge has yet to excel.
