Saturday marked the first time some members of Clemson’s 2024 signing class played in Death Valley. The Tigers held their initial fall camp scrimmage at Memorial Stadium.
which was the first chance for summer enrollees such as wide receiver T.J. Moore, tight end Christian Bentancur, cornerback Ashton Hampton, defensive tackle Hevin Brown-Shuler, defensive end Darien Mayo, and linebackers Drew Woodaz and C.J. Kubah-Taylor to participate.
After the scrimmage, head coach Dabo Swinney discussed the performance of the new summer arrivals. He noted that while many of the early enrollees had already participated in spring practice and the spring game, the summer enrollees had not had that opportunity.
Swinney mentioned that some of the summer enrollees struggled a bit in their first scrimmage, citing Mayo as an example.
“Big Mayo, he’s going to be a good one,” Swinney said of the 6-foot-7, 266-pound former four-star recruit ranked among the top-150 national prospects by several outlets. However, Swinney pointed out that Mayo gave up a long play due to a missed assignment.
“He’s a big, talented kid, but he needs to focus on his assignments and be aware of the calls,” Swinney explained. “This is what practice is for. He’ll learn from these experiences and improve.”
