Arkansas football defensive lineman Landon Jackson has been named to the 2024 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List, according to an announcement from the Football Writers Association of America on Tuesday. This prestigious award is given annually to the top defensive player in college football, as chosen by the FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club.

The list features 75 players, including 16 other defensive linemen, and Jackson is one of 19 players from the SEC recognized.

The Arkansas Razorbacks will begin their training camp on Wednesday, marking a crucial period for fifth-year Coach Sam Pittman. Following a disappointing 4-8 season that brought his overall record to 23-25, Pittman faces a season where success and a likely bowl appearance are critical for his future.

The Razorbacks will kick off their season slightly earlier than most teams, with their opener against Arkansas-Pine Bluff scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 29, two days before the originally planned date. This early start will provide Arkansas with additional preparation time for their high-profile Week 2 nonconference game at Oklahoma State, which plays South Dakota State on Aug. 31.

Pittman and strength and conditioning coach Ben Sowders will address the media on Tuesday to discuss their goals for camp, summer progress, and health updates.

Transfer quarterback Taylen Green, who recently participated in a name, image, and likeness event throwing to Fayetteville High School players, shared his thoughts on the team’s preseason ranking, which places the Razorbacks ahead of only Vanderbilt and Mississippi State. “That’s why it’s called the preseason,” Green said, noting that the lower ranking might give the Razorbacks an advantage by allowing them to surprise opponents.

At the SEC media days in Dallas, Pittman expressed enthusiasm about the 2024 team, despite anticipated low expectations from outsiders. “They … are developing a culture with Ben Sowders and the strength staff that’s like no other,” Pittman said. “I’m really excited about this football team and the talent level we have.”
