The team recently drafted wide receiver Roman Wilson in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, envisioning him as their primary slot receiver if he can handle the role effectively in his rookie season.
However, concerns persist about the boundary receiver position. As discussed in our article forecasting the team’s key training camp battles, this spot is likely to be contested between Van Jefferson and Quez Watkins, both of whom have uncertainties surrounding their performance.
Unless there are moves made before the season begins, the Steelers might consider acquiring receivers such as Brandon Aiyuk from the San Francisco 49ers or Darius Slayton from the New York Giants. Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report has identified Pittsburgh as potential destinations for both players, whether that happens before the 2024 season or closer to the trade deadline.
According to Knox, acquiring Aiyuk could involve giving up significant draft capital, possibly including a 2025 first-round pick, a 2025 second-round pick, and a 2026 fourth-round pick. However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that the 49ers are currently not looking to trade Aiyuk, despite his desire for a long-term contract.
Nevertheless, the Steelers are keeping a close watch on the situation and are ready to act swiftly if circumstances change and Aiyuk becomes available. It’s worth noting that the draft compensation suggested by Knox might be higher than what ultimately would be required.
In contrast, while not as impactful as Aiyuk, Slayton could provide a more stable option for the boundary receiver role than the Steelers currently have. He has consistently surpassed 700 receiving yards in four of his five seasons, and although he also seeks a long-term contract, the Giants have thus far only increased his salary for 2024 without committing further.
Overall, the Steelers are assessing their options and could improve their receiver corps significantly if opportunities arise in the trade market.
