The Phoenix Suns and head coach Mike Budenholzer made a bold move by shifting Bradley Beal to the bench in an effort to spark the team out of a four-game losing streak.
Budenholzer emphasized that the decision wasn’t a reflection of Beal’s talent but rather a tactical adjustment to improve the team’s overall performance and find better combinations over the course of 48 minutes.
Beal, who had been struggling during the losing streak with averages of 12.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.7 assists on subpar shooting splits, admitted he was surprised by the move but maintained professionalism.
“Coach made a decision. I’m not going to sit there and argue with him,” Beal said. “I’m a starter in this league, I firmly believe that… but I’m not going to be a distraction.”
The decision paid off in the Suns’ victory, with Beal delivering a standout performance off the bench. He scored 13 consecutive points in the third quarter, helping the Suns take control of the game.
Budenholzer, who celebrated his 500th career coaching win, praised Beal for his impact and professionalism, saying, “What he was able to do tonight really put us in a great spot… He’s been a pro. He was there for us tonight in a big way.”
While Beal’s move to the bench was unorthodox for a player of his caliber, his response and performance could provide a turning point for the Suns as they look to build momentum moving forward.
