The Detroit Lions made two noteworthy moves this week, highlighting both challenges and adjustments as the team pushes forward late in the season.
James Houston Waived
Two years after showing immense promise, the Lions waived defensive end James Houston on Tuesday. Drafted in the sixth round in 2022, Houston initially made a significant impact after a midseason call-up, recording 8.0 sacks and 11 quarterback hits in just seven games.
However, his inability to consistently stop the run or maintain rush lane integrity limited his role in subsequent seasons.
A fractured ankle derailed most of his 2023 campaign, and his production this year—one sack and eight total tackles in 116 snaps across eight games—was insufficient to secure his spot.
Coach Dan Campbell expressed hope that a fresh start elsewhere could benefit Houston. If he clears waivers, Houston will become a free agent eligible to sign with any team. The Lions now have an open roster spot, though they haven’t yet announced how they will fill it.
Punt Return Dilemma
The Lions also face a special teams challenge after Kalif Raymond, their top punt returner, suffered a foot injury during their Week 12 win over the Colts. As a stopgap, All-Pro wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown stepped in, returning two punts for 15 yards.
While St. Brown’s reliability made him a suitable emergency option, the Lions are exploring alternatives for their Thanksgiving matchup against the Chicago Bears.
Coach Campbell hinted that a practice squad member or external addition could take over the role, ensuring St. Brown isn’t overburdened in future games.
However, Campbell did not rule out using St. Brown in high-stakes situations, praising the wideout’s reliability and versatility.
The Lions’ adjustments come at a crucial point in the season as they balance injuries and roster challenges while vying for playoff positioning.
