Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold’s career resurgence can be attributed to several factors, but Jacksonville Jaguars coach Doug Pederson summed it up with two simple words ahead of their Week 10 matchup:
“Justin Jefferson,” he joked, exchanging a look with a reporter.
The reporter responded, “Why are you looking at me?”
“Because you were thinking it,” Pederson laughed before giving a more detailed explanation that acknowledged Darnold’s contributions.
Pederson elaborated: “The talent surrounding him makes a big difference. Having a strong run game, a solid defense, and being in Kevin O’Connell’s system where he’s calling plays effectively—it all helps. Darnold has always been a steady quarterback, no matter the team or role. He’s maturing, learning, and proving he can get the job done. That’s evident on film. And yes, Justin Jefferson is a top-tier receiver who can cause serious issues for defenses.”
Darnold has been heavily reliant on Jefferson, targeting him on 31% of his throws through nine games. Despite the Vikings attempting the sixth-fewest passes in the league, Jefferson has the highest target share among all NFL receivers.
While Jefferson’s presence certainly opens up the offense, Darnold’s individual performance has been impressive. He currently holds a passer rating of 107.8 (fourth in the league) and a QBR of 58.4 (14th). His Pro Football Focus (PFF) passing grade of 74.3 ranks 13th among qualifying quarterbacks.
Per the *Minnesota Star Tribune*, Darnold is on pace to complete 329 of 474 passes (a 69.4% completion rate) for 4,038 yards and 36 touchdowns this season. These projected stats would surpass his previous career highs of 273 completions, a 61.9% completion rate, 3,024 yards, 19 touchdowns, and an 84.3 passer rating.
