The Washington Commanders moved up to 5-2 in Week 7, but this success didn’t come from rookie standout Jayden Daniels, who left early in the first quarter due to a rib injury. Daniels, expected to be a key player in the upcoming Week 8 game against the Chicago Bears, is currently uncertain for the matchup.
At Friday’s final practice, Daniels was notably absent from the portion open to reporters, according to Ian Rapoport. Head coach Dan Quinn later mentioned that the team planned to evaluate Daniels’ status over the weekend after “really pushing” him in practice, as reported by Tom Pelissero. Daniels, listed as week-to-week since Week 7, may miss his first game of the season, with Quinn indicating he’ll likely be a game-time decision for Week 8.
There was a small positive development, however, as Daniels was seen heading toward a separate practice “bubble” where quarterbacks were throwing, noted by reporter Nicki Jhabvala. His level of participation remains unclear.
In Daniels’ absence, veteran Marcus Mariota stepped up impressively in Washington’s 40-7 victory over the Carolina Panthers, throwing for 205 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions, while also adding 34 rushing yards. The Commanders’ defense played a significant role as well, holding Panthers QB Andy Dalton to just 93 passing yards with two interceptions.
The Commanders, now in a solid position with a 5-2 start, face a setback as they’ll be without defensive back Kevon Seymour for the next six games. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Seymour’s suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drugs policy. Due to his suspension, he won’t be eligible to return until Week 15 against the New Orleans Saints on December 15. The Commanders, however, have other defensive backs on their practice squad to provide additional depth if needed.
