Star wide receiver Davante Adams was acquired by the NY Jets from the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday, in one of the most high-profile midseason moves in NFL history.
Not every player on the roster will necessarily benefit from the Adams deal, even though it is undoubtedly fantastic news for the Jets’ postseason hopes. Mike Williams is one such player who is currently on the outside looking in.
The former wide receiver for the Los Angeles Chargers is now the odd man out in the Jets’ wide receiver group, and it’s likely that he’ll be traded before next month’s trade deadline.
Additionally, based on a report from uSTADIUM, it is quite likely that Williams has already played his farewell game as a Jet.
According to the source, Williams may have made a healthy scratch on Sunday if the Jets are unable to move him before then, even though they are anticipated to trade him soon. This is consistent with earlier reports on Williams’ anticipated departure.
Williams was anticipated to add much-needed depth to the Jets’ wide receiver group when he inked a one-year, $10 million contract with the team in the offseason. Sadly, after six weeks, he has only hauled in 10 receptions for 145 yards.
Williams’ early-season snap count and late-season rise to prominence in the offence may have contributed to some of that, but in recent weeks, it has been more and more evident that he and Aaron Rodgers are not on the same page.
Williams has now made blatant mistakes that have resulted in game-winning Rodgers interceptions in back-to-back games. In the Jets’ Week 6 defeat to the Buffalo Bills, he was targeted three times but was unable to record a reception.
Williams has shown that he is still capable of playing at a high level in brief bursts. He is still among the NFL’s top contested-catch X receivers. However, Adams isn’t truly a part of the Jets offence now that he’s in the fold.
The Jets have perhaps the best wide receiver tandem in the NFL in Adams and Garrett Wilson, and Allen Lazard has become a key member of the offence once again. As of Week 7, he leads the NFL in touchdown receptions.
Williams is now the clear loser in the Adams trade. Given Williams’ past and their apparent determination to locate a trade partner, the Jets may decide to hold him out of action going forward in order to prevent any injuries.
After the game on Monday night, Williams underwent a head injury evaluation, but he passed the concussion protocol. If the Jets know they’re going to trade him, there’s no reason for them to take a chance on another injury.
The Jets’ roster is already feeling the effects of the Adams move. It appears that Mike Williams will be the next domino to fall. Anticipate a trade as soon as possible.
