Speaking to reporters on Friday for the first time since his suspension, Green Bay Packers receiver Romeo Doubs offered little explanation for his absence from practice last Thursday and Friday.
According to *Packers On SI*, Doubs reportedly skipped practice out of frustration with his role on offense, a claim Doubs denied. “No, it wasn’t,” he said. However, when asked directly about his thoughts on his role, he declined to comment, saying, “No comment.”
Doubs went on to praise the team, saying, “It’s a great offense here. We’ve got some ball players… it’s much bigger than just me finding my role. In this league, it’s about winning football games.”
At one point, Doubs mentioned mental health, but later clarified, “I’m doing fine.” He also alluded to some off-the-field issues, but didn’t provide details, saying only, “I had some things going on.” When asked about his family, he confirmed that they were fine.
Pressed on why he missed practice, Doubs said, “I had some things going on… I don’t feel comfortable getting too deep into that… I did my best to communicate, and I’m just thankful I’m here right now.” Reflecting on the situation, he admitted, “I absolutely wish I would’ve handled things differently,” noting he could have stayed in better communication.
Doubs seemed eager to move past the incident, stating, “I think we just want to move forward… and handle it the right way.”
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst suspended Doubs for the game against the Rams, a decision that likely wasn’t related to mental health or family issues but rather Doubs’ choice not to attend practices. Gutekunst explained, “His decisions and actions during the week negatively impacted the team.”
No one within the organization or Doubs’ circle has disputed the original reporting. Fellow receiver Christian Watson acknowledged there may be challenges in rebuilding team unity, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing team goals.
Despite the suspension, head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed Doubs would play against the Cardinals, praising his performance during the week. Doubs, grateful to be back, expressed uncertainty about how to regain trust, saying, “I do not feel comfortable answering that… I’m thankful that I’m here now.”
Cornerback Jaire Alexander, who had faced a similar situation last year, offered advice to Doubs, encouraging him to “lean on your brothers” and focus on the bigger picture.
A fourth-round pick in 2022, Doubs had a promising rookie season and a solid second year, with standout performances in the playoffs. However, this season started slowly, with just 12 receptions for 169 yards in the first four games and no red-zone touchdowns, a stark contrast to his success in that area last year.
