With third-year wide receiver Romeo Doubs returning from his one-game suspension, the Green Bay Packers needed to open a spot on their 53-man roster. According to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, the Packers released cornerback Robert Rochell on Monday.
Rochell was promoted to the active roster from the practice squad on Saturday, and Schneidman suggests the veteran cornerback could rejoin the practice squad if he clears waivers. Rochell still has one practice squad elevation left this season before the team must add him to the active roster.
The 26-year-old cornerback was called up for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams due to Doubs’ suspension for conduct detrimental to the team. Rochell has played in three games for Green Bay this season, all on special teams. He logged 11 special teams snaps during Sunday’s win over the Rams.
Rochell is in his second season with the Packers, after being signed off the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad last summer. In nine games with Green Bay last season, he recorded four combined tackles and played 52 percent of the special teams snaps. A former Central Arkansas standout, Rochell was drafted in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Rams, where he appeared in 28 games with five starts, recording 19 combined tackles, four pass deflections, and two fumble recoveries during his two-year stint.
