The Pittsburgh Steelers have promoted versatile offensive lineman John Leglue from the practice squad to the active roster for their game against the Los Angeles Chargers. This decision follows the placement of offensive tackle Troy Fautanu on injured reserve due to a knee injury sustained during Friday’s practice.
Fautanu is likely to miss most, if not all, of the season. With fourth tackle Dylan Cook also on injured reserve with a serious foot injury, the Steelers may turn to Leglue to help provide depth. If Leglue is just a temporary fix, the team might consider bringing in an outside player.
Leglue joined the Steelers after cutdown day and has experience playing in Arthur Smith’s offense in Atlanta last season, allowing him to step in at any of the five offensive line positions if needed.
Currently, the Steelers have only two true tackles on the roster, although Spencer Anderson can also play both right and left tackle. He is starting at left guard with Isaac Seumalo out due to a pectoral injury.
Fautanu, the Steelers’ first-round pick in 2024, suffered a potentially serious knee injury that could keep him out for the rest of his rookie season. This was first reported by Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. After experiencing a “tweak” during practice on Friday, he underwent an MRI shortly afterward.
Due to the severity of his injury, Fautanu has been ruled out and placed on injured reserve. The Steelers elevated Leglue for additional depth on the offensive line, where he can play all five positions, particularly tackle, which will be crucial.
Jones removed his elbow brace earlier this week and seems to be healthier than before. After Mike Tomlin suggested Jones would have a chance to bounce back, this situation presents him with an opportunity to prove himself.
