The New York Yankees kicked off their scoring early in a commanding 11-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.
A key defensive play in the bottom of the first, which resulted in Mariners outfielder Victor Robles being tagged out at the plate, was highlighted by manager Aaron Boone as a significant moment for the team. Boone noted that even with a comfortable lead, this play ended a lengthy inning for pitcher Luis Gil.
He seemed to injure his hand on the play but X-rays later confirmed it was not serious. The Yankees continued to build on their lead, scoring additional runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
Juan Soto celebrated his 40th home run of the season and the 200th of his career, becoming the seventh-youngest player in MLB history to reach that milestone.
Meanwhile, MLB conducted a brief investigation into comments made by Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who suggested that pitcher Brayan Bello might have intentionally thrown at Yankees star Aaron Judge during their weekend matchup. Ultimately, MLB chose not to discipline Cora or the Red Sox for the incident from September 14.
When asked about Cora not facing any consequences, Yankees manager Boone expressed that he was ready to move on from the situation, though he subtly dismissed the Red Sox. “I feel like we’re past this weekend. Chances are, we’re not going to play them anymore this year. We’ve got too many important things ahead to focus on that,” Boone said.
In the game that ignited the controversy, Gerrit Cole hit Rafael Devers with a pitch in the first inning and later intentionally walked him. Cora interpreted this as an indication that Cole had deliberately hit Devers to avoid pitching to him.
