As the Phoenix Suns approach the start of their 2024-25 training camp, their roster is mostly set, but there are still potential moves that could address some depth issues through free agency or trades.
With no clear upgrades for a big man available on the trade market, the Suns might consider adding guards or wings to bolster their lineup without giving up the 15th roster spot.
Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report suggests that a former Suns player could be an excellent target if the opportunity arises:
“The Suns face significant restrictions. In an ideal scenario where the team is competitive and Kevin Durant is content with their direction, their options are limited. They can only acquire players on minimum contracts or trade salaries dollar-for-dollar, with the highest-paid expendable player currently being Josh Okogie at $8.25 million.
“A potentially valuable addition could be Jevon Carter from the Chicago Bulls. Carter, a veteran guard known for his ball-handling, shooting, and defense, might opt into his $6.8 million contract for 2025-26, giving Phoenix an expiring contract to use in a trade.”
Carter, 28, played for the Suns from 2019-21 before moving to the Brooklyn Nets. He revitalized his career with the Milwaukee Bucks during the 2022-23 season, which led to a 3-year, $20 million deal with the Bulls last summer.
However, the Bulls now have a crowded backcourt with Ayo Dosunmu, Coby White, Josh Giddey, Zach LaVine, and possibly Dalen Terry. This situation could make Carter the odd man out, and he could fit well into Mike Budenholzer’s rotation, where he previously had a career-best season.
Adding Carter could be a strategic move for the Suns, enhancing both their flexibility and talent.
