LSU Football: Brian Kelly Provides Update On Former 5-Star DL Dominick McKinley…SEE MORE…

Brian Kelly and the LSU Tigers secured the commitment of the top player in Louisiana when five-star defensive tackle Dominick McKinley signed in February.

The top prospect in the state decided to end his recruitment early and stay local, choosing to join the 2024 Recruiting Class in Baton Rouge. After enrolling over the summer, McKinley is expected to have a standout career with LSU.

However, his start has been slower than anticipated, with many expecting him to make an immediate impact.

Currently, with starting defensive tackle Jacobian Guillory out for the season due to a torn Achilles, players like Gio Paez, Shone Washington, Ahmad Breaux, and Jay’viar Suggs are now key contributors inside. Defensive lineman Paris Shand has also shifted to defensive tackle.

McKinley is further behind on the depth chart with five Tigers currently ahead of him. Additionally, he has been dealing with a significant turf toe injury that has affected his performance over recent weeks.

Kelly acknowledged McKinley’s challenges, saying, “He’s had a bit of a setback with turf toe, which has been quite significant. He’s working through it, getting scarring down on that joint, which should help him move more freely. He’s currently on our demo squad and doing well. We’re keeping an eye on him for this season, but we need to get him healthy first.”

Kelly also noted that McKinley is navigating the demands of his first year in college football, including attending classes and dealing with injury, which is impacting his development.

Looking at the defensive tackle position, Kelly praised position coach Bo Davis for his excellent coaching and the progress of the group. “Gio’s a veteran, despite being new here. Paris Shand will contribute as a veteran leader. We have several players stepping up,” Kelly said. “Bo Davis is a great leader, helping the players understand the importance of their roles. We need young players to step up and contribute meaningfully.”

Kelly explained that while not every player needs to take 30 snaps, they must be effective in the 12-15 snaps they do play. “Bo’s done a fantastic job ensuring that every player understands their significance and that each snap counts.”

LSU will face its first game since Guillory’s injury this weekend, and the focus will be on the interior defensive line. The Tigers will play against LaNorris Sellers and the South Carolina Gamecocks at 11 a.m. CT on ABC.
