If an NFL team is on the lookout for a backup quarterback in the near future, they might want to consider reaching out to the Denver Broncos.
According to Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report, Denver quarterback Zach Wilson is a strong candidate for a trade this season. Knox has highlighted the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants as potential destinations for Wilson.
Knox noted on September 11 that, like Mac Jones, Wilson showed some promising moments in the preseason that could attract trade interest. He ranked Wilson sixth on his “trade block big board,” pointing out that the Packers might need a new quarterback due to Jordan Love’s injury. Although NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the Packers haven’t shown interest in acquiring a veteran quarterback yet, this could change based on Malik Willis’s performance in Week 2.
The Broncos acquired Wilson in the offseason by trading a sixth-round pick for him with the New York Jets.
Knox observed that Wilson, a first-round pick from the 2021 draft who has yet to meet expectations, is currently behind Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham on the Broncos’ depth chart.
With the Packers facing uncertainty due to Love’s injury and an untested backup in Willis, the Giants might also be interested in Wilson, particularly since they seem to be struggling. Starting quarterback Daniel Jones had a poor performance in Week 1, and with Drew Lock as his backup, the Giants might need to consider other options. Wilson could be a viable candidate to step in and provide a competent performance for the season.
Broncos general manager George Paton has expressed confidence in Wilson’s potential, stating that he believes Wilson has the qualities of a future NFL starter, despite current challenges. Paton mentioned Wilson’s strong arm and potential, suggesting that he could eventually become a starting quarterback in the league.
