Pat Surtain II stands out as the top defensive player on the roster, though the rest of the defense has significant room for improvement. Unfortunately, the defense will face a setback as linebacker Jonas Griffith has announced that he will undergo another ACL surgery on the same knee he had surgery on last year, according to Zac Stevens of DNVR Sports.
Griffith, who went undrafted in 2020 and spent time on the practice squads of the San Francisco 49ers and Indianapolis Colts before joining the Broncos, has shown promise but has struggled with injuries. While it’s unfortunate that he will miss another season, he may still have an opportunity to return next year and contribute to a team in need of depth at linebacker.
In the offseason, the Broncos acquired former New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson, who had a disappointing three-year stint with the Jets. The hope was that a fresh start in Denver might rejuvenate his career. Initial reports suggested that Wilson struggled during the offseason and training camp, raising concerns that he might not make the roster. However, the Broncos decided to keep three quarterbacks, with Bo Nix as the starter, Jarrett Stidham as the backup, and Wilson as third on the depth chart.
Despite falling to third, Wilson is still viewed positively by Denver’s management. General manager George Paton expressed confidence in Wilson’s potential to be a starter in the NFL, noting his skills and traits despite some ongoing issues. Paton praised Wilson’s talent and character, stating, “No doubt. He has starter tools all over. It’s been pretty cool just watching him with really no expectations. He’s still working through some things.”
Wilson’s career stats—57% completion rate, 6,293 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions—reflect a challenging career so far.
