The decision-making process will be much simpler if they clinch a World Series title, but if they fall short, significant changes could be on the horizon.
With a record of 76-54 and a six-game lead over the Atlanta Braves in the National League East, the Phillies have had a generally promising season. Despite some recent struggles over the past two months, they seem to have regained their form, as evidenced by their strong performance in the series against the Kansas City Royals, where they scored a total of 22 runs across the weekend games.
The offseason remains uncertain, especially since Dave Dombrowski has consistently shown a willingness to be aggressive with team changes. Given that this is a team with World Series potential, if they don’t achieve their goals, Dombrowski will need to take the necessary steps to improve the team.
The outfield has been a weak spot for much of the season, and it was surprising they didn’t address it at the trade deadline. The offseason presents another opportunity to make improvements.
One potential target is Anthony Santander from the Baltimore Orioles, who could be a perfect addition to the roster due to his power and outfield capabilities. Jim Bowden of The Athletic considers him to be the “most underrated free agent” available.
“Anthony Santander is the most underrated free agent in this class. He’s been a key player in the Orioles’ lineup for the past three years, averaging over 30 home runs a season and consistently driving in runs. He made his first All-Star team this year and is the best corner outfielder available.”
Santander has had an impressive 2024 season with 38 home runs. Typically, such performance might command a contract worth over $100 million, but ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel predicts his contract could be between $40 and $80 million.
If McDaniel’s forecast proves accurate, there will be significant interest from across Major League Baseball. The Phillies should be among those interested, as Santander could play a crucial role for a World Series contender, benefiting both him and the team.
In other news, former Phillies infielder Jean Segura signed a minor league deal with the Baltimore Orioles on August 9, an unexpected move given his absence from professional baseball since his stint with the Miami Marlins in July 2023. However, Segura’s time with the Orioles has already ended; he requested to be released from their Triple-A Norfolk team after posting a .137/.250/.196 slash line in 51 at-bats.
Segura, 34, might look for another opportunity or consider retirement, as he has accumulated over 11 years in the big leagues, qualifying for a pension. While he hasn’t announced any retirement plans, it’s something to monitor.
Despite a recent downturn in performance, Segura had a distinguished career with a career WAR of 26.2 and a slash line of .281/.327/.401, including 110 home runs. His contributions to the Phillies, particularly in the 2021 season and during the 2022 playoffs, were notable. If he does retire, he can be proud of his accomplished MLB career.
