In Miami football’s opening victory against the Florida Gators, some expectations were met, but the game turned out to be more lopsided than anticipated, with the Hurricanes trouncing their in-state rivals 41-17. Quarterback Cam Ward delivered an impressive performance and engaged with Gators fans, while head coach Mario Cristobal and Ward discussed the win and their mindset moving forward.
Cristobal has begun his third season with Miami, and despite previous underwhelming results given high expectations, he remains focused on the team’s mindset. According to The Miami Herald, Cristobal acknowledged the work needed upon his arrival at Miami and emphasized the players’ determination to change the narrative through their performance.
“People often overlook where we started,” Cristobal noted. “When I came to Miami, there was much to address. The players have faced a lot, decided enough was enough, and showed their commitment through their play.”
He added, “Our guys immediately built momentum and seized it.”
Cam Ward, who has emerged as Miami football’s vocal leader, excelled with 385 passing yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. Despite his standout debut, the Washington State transfer emphasized the need to quickly shift focus to the next game.
“We’ll enjoy this win briefly,” Ward said. “The key is managing success and focusing on the next challenge.”
As a senior aiming to elevate the Hurricanes to new heights, especially at the quarterback position—a historically weak spot—Ward credited the team’s preparation and their ability to thrive in a challenging environment.
“I’m feeling great,” Ward commented. “Kudos to the O-line. Our preparation has been the best since I arrived in college. We need to manage success and continue progressing step by step.”
