The Boston Red Sox are firmly in contention for an American League Wild Card spot and are expected to be even stronger in 2025.
Regardless of whether they make the playoffs this year, there’s a lot to appreciate about this Red Sox squad. The team boasts a wealth of exciting young talent and could see further improvement in 2025 with a successful offseason. With available funds and potential acquisitions, Boston is well-positioned to enhance their roster.
Luis Severino, the former New York Yankees star who joined the New York Mets before the 2024 season, has regained his form after a disappointing 2023. He will be a free agent at season’s end and is anticipated to secure a multi-year contract, as reported by CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson.
According to Anderson, “Luis Severino, Mets right-handed pitcher, has bounced back from a rough previous year by evolving into a different pitcher from earlier in his career. He’s now using a fastball-sinker-sweeper combination instead of his old fastball-slider-change approach, focusing on controlled contact over strikeouts. This adjustment has worked well, making him a strong candidate for a multi-year deal.”
Severino would be an ideal fit for the Red Sox. Boston’s starting rotation needs improvement this winter, and Severino could provide that without a hefty price tag. The Red Sox were interested in him this past offseason and should consider pursuing him again.
Jarren Duran has been a standout for the Red Sox this season. The speedy outfielder has energized Boston’s offense and emerged as one of the top players in the league. He ranks third in the majors with 8.5 wins above replacement, trailing only Aaron Judge and Bobby Witt Jr.
At 27, Duran has exceeded expectations, setting the tone at the top of the lineup. He has recorded 20 leadoff extra-base hits this season, the highest for a Red Sox player since at least 1961.
The Red Sox’s current playoff push is largely due to Duran’s impressive performance. Despite numerous injuries throughout the season, Duran has remained healthy and reliable. With his contract extending into the future, he will be a key asset for Boston going forward after a stellar season.
