Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran has issued an apology after using a homophobic slur in response to a heckling fan during Sunday’s 10-2 defeat to the Houston Astros.
A fan at Fenway Park shouted, “Tennis racket! Tennis racket! You need a tennis racket!” to which Duran responded with “Shut up,” followed by a curse word and the slur. Duran was walked in that at-bat.
I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization and, more importantly, to the LGBTQ community. I let down our young fans who look up to me as a role model. I intend to use this incident as an opportunity for personal growth and education.”
The Red Sox addressed the matter with Duran immediately after the game. The team’s statement read, “We have discussed the incident with Jarren and support his apology to our fans, especially the LGBTQ community. We are committed to ensuring Fenway Park remains a welcoming place for all, and we will continue to educate our team and staff on the importance of inclusivity.”
Duran is having a strong season, batting .291 with 14 home runs and 58 RBIs.
