For the first time in over ten years, Juan Pablo Montoya will compete in the NASCAR Cup Series. He will pilot the No. 50 Toyota Camry for 23XI Racing at Watkins Glen, New York, on September 15.
This race will be Montoya’s first Cup Series appearance since the 2014 Brickyard 400 and will mark the final race of the season for 23XI’s part-time third car.
The No. 50 car has previously been driven by Kamui Kobayashi at COTA and by Corey Heim at Nashville earlier this season. Mobil 1 will sponsor Montoya’s car, continuing the support they provided for Kobayashi and Heim as part of their 50th-anniversary celebration.
Montoya has previously won at Watkins Glen, claiming victory in the 2010 Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen, where he bested Kurt Busch, Marcos Ambrose, and AJ Allmendinger. This win was one of his two Cup Series victories, with his other coming at Sonoma in 2007.
Montoya is expected to drive one of the strongest cars he’s had in the Cup Series. While he raced full-time for Chip Ganassi Racing from 2007 to 2013, his success was often limited by mechanical issues and less competitive equipment compared to his rivals.
Montoya will join the Cup Series field at Watkins Glen on September 15. The Go Bowling At The Glen is scheduled to start shortly after 3 p.m. ET, with coverage available on USA Network, MRN, the NBC Sports App, and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
