The Pittsburgh Steelers can remove one wide receiver target from their list now that Tyreek Hill and the Miami Dolphins have renegotiated his contract, which will pay the All-Pro $90 million over the next three years.
The Steelers were reportedly interested in trading for Hill and believed he was one of three major players they aimed to acquire this offseason, alongside San Francisco 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk and Seattle Seahawks star D.K. Metcalf.
Even though Ben Roethlisberger retired over two years ago and showed signs of decline after a 2019 elbow injury, the Steelers have yet to find a proper replacement for their former franchise quarterback. Heading into 2024, they still face significant uncertainties at the quarterback position.
Despite Roethlisberger performing well into his late 30s, the Steelers didn’t make a serious effort to replace him until after his retirement. They only used a first or second-round pick on a quarterback a few months after Roethlisberger’s retirement in 2022.
Kenny Pickett, who was the only quarterback selected in the first 70 picks of the 2022 draft, lasted just two seasons before being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Steelers have since tried to overhaul their quarterback situation by signing veteran Russell Wilson and trading for promising young quarterback Justin Fields.
Now, the Steelers will either look elsewhere or narrow their search. Meanwhile, the Dolphins and Hill have agreed on a contract that will ultimately guarantee the wide receiver $106 million.
The Steelers have stated they are not actively seeking a wide receiver trade but are open to considering one if it arises. Many believe a trade will happen, with Aiyuk still being the top target as they attempt to negotiate a long-term deal with the 49ers.
