The quarterback position is crucial for any football team, and the Clemson Tigers seem well-prepared in this area for the 2024 season.
As fall camp approaches, head coach Dabo Swinney spoke with the media at the Allen Reeves Football Complex on Thursday, addressing the quarterback situation.
There will be no competition for the starting role; it will be held by Cade Klubnik. Entering his third year with Clemson and his second as the clear starter, Klubnik has previously appeared in 10 games as a freshman behind D.J. Uiagalelei in 2022.
Klubnik was steady but not exceptional in 2023, completing 63.9% of his passes for 2,844 yards, 19 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. For Clemson to be a championship contender this year, they will need their passing game to become more dynamic. At the ACC Kickoff event in Charlotte, Swinney highlighted his appreciation for the stability provided by Klubnik, especially amid a conference filled with transfer quarterbacks.
“It’s definitely a blessing to have your starting quarterback returning,” Swinney remarked. “We’ve seen great performances from newcomers, but having a seasoned player who has already been through the system is invaluable.”
Klubnik, now in his second year as the Tigers’ starting quarterback, has demonstrated significant growth both physically and mentally, as well as in his leadership qualities.
“Cade is an excellent young man and a talented player. He’s maturing quickly and showing great progress as a leader,” Swinney praised.
During his press conference, Swinney also discussed the handling of quarterbacks during camp, emphasizing new rules designed to prevent injuries and preparing everyone for different scenarios on the field.
“We have four quarterbacks who can play for us,” Swinney said. “It’s exciting because it’s been a while since we’ve had this much depth. Each quarterback has their own strengths and weaknesses, but all are capable of helping us win. Paul Tyson, our fourth quarterback, is especially reliable and can perform at a high level effortlessly.”
