With less than an hour remaining before the MLB trade deadline, Jon Morosi of MLB Network dropped a major surprise that left Boston Red Sox fans in shock.
Morosi reported on social media that Roman Anthony, the Red Sox’s No. 2 prospect, had been pulled from the Portland Sea Dogs’ lineup.
Before the Red Sox’s 7:10 game against the Mariners, manager Alex Cora mentioned that the front office was still working on trades, with rumors circulating about potential deals. However, nothing captured the attention of Red Sox Nation quite like the possibility of Anthony being traded.
Amid speculation about available pitchers such as Jack Flaherty, Garrett Crochet, and Tyler Anderson, Red Sox fans hoped that Anthony would be exchanged for one of these talents. Fans from other teams also expressed a desire for the young outfielder and top-100 prospect to join their organizations.
As the deadline approached, the Red Sox made a crucial move to address their bullpen needs.
Boston acquired veteran reliever Luis García from the Los Angeles Angels, a deal first reported by Jon Heyman. García, a 37-year-old impending free agent, was traded for four Red Sox Triple-A prospects: Ryan Zeferjahn, Matthew Lugo, Yeferson Vargas, and Niko Kavadas.
García has posted a 3.71 ERA with 40 strikeouts and 14 walks in 43.2 innings this season, along with four saves in six chances.
Although García is a right-hander and the Red Sox were seeking left-handed pitching, he has been performing well recently. Over his last 15 appearances, García has a 2.76 ERA, and in his last seven outings, he boasts a 1.17 ERA, making him a valuable addition for Boston at the trade deadline.
