The Los Angeles Lakers have been eyeing Portland Trail Blazers forward Jerami Grant for a while, and interest has intensified this summer. The Lakers have been exploring ways to enhance their roster, and Grant’s three-and-D capabilities could be a valuable addition.
The main sticking point in negotiations has been Portland’s demand for two first-round picks in exchange for Grant, a price the Lakers have been reluctant to meet. However, it seems the teams were close to reaching a deal.
Trail Blazers reporter Danny Marang revealed that the two teams nearly finalized a trade that would have sent Grant to Los Angeles for the two first-round picks. This information was shared during an episode of the Jacked Ramsays: A Portland Trail Blazers Podcast.
“From what I understand, Klutch was trying to facilitate the deal, and the Lakers initially agreed to the two first-round picks for Jerami. But when it came time to finalize, Rob Pelinka hesitated,” Marang noted.
Grant’s agent, Rich Paul, also represents LeBron James and Anthony Davis, which adds to the speculation that Paul might want Grant to join his clients in Los Angeles. However, the Lakers’ reluctance is partly due to Grant’s substantial contract.
Grant is set to earn $29.7 million this season, with his salary increasing each year. The new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) makes it more challenging for teams to manage their rosters when several players have high salaries.
While Grant could be a significant asset for the Lakers, it’s wise for them to be patient. There’s plenty of time between now and the start of the season, and there’s a chance that Portland might lower their asking price to move Grant’s contract.
