If the Los Angeles Lakers aim to make a major move this offseason, it will likely need to be through the trade market. Bleacher Report’s Isaac Gutierrez has identified potential trade targets the Lakers might consider in the upcoming weeks.
One notable name on the list is Utah Jazz guard Collin Sexton. Known for his speed, Sexton could be an appealing option, and acquiring him might not require a steep price. Gutierrez suggests that a trade involving a 2029 first-round pick and Rui Hachimura might be sufficient to secure Sexton from Utah, given the team’s surplus of guards.
“I think the Lakers need another creator off the bench who can serve as a backup point guard,” Gutierrez explained during a July 24, 2024, live stream. “At some point, they’re likely to trade D’Angelo Russell.”
“The first name on my list of backup point guard trade targets is someone I’ve been advocating for—Collin Sexton. He would be an ideal young guard to complement LeBron James and Anthony Davis as a third option.”
Sexton is under contract for two more seasons on a four-year, $70.9 million deal, with a cap hit of $18.3 million for the 2024-25 season. In comparison, Hachimura has two seasons remaining on a three-year, $51 million contract, with a $17 million cap hit for 2024-25.
Although Gutierrez suggests Sexton as a backup guard, he is more than capable of starting in the NBA. Last season, Sexton played 78 games for Utah, including 51 starts. Over his six-year NBA career, he has started 274 games, averaging 18.7 points, 4.9 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game, with a 39.4% shooting percentage from beyond the arc. Sexton could potentially be a more favorable starting point guard option for the Lakers compared to D’Angelo Russell.
