After the Pittsburgh Steelers traded Diontae Johnson, George Pickens emerged as the primary receiver in the team’s lineup heading into training camp.
Despite Pickens’ breakout season in 2023, there are skeptics about whether he can effectively assume the role of a top-tier NFL receiver. One such skeptic is former NFL general manager and Steelers executive Doug Whaley, who described Pickens as a specialist in one particular aspect of the game.
“He lacks consistency,” Whaley remarked on The Fan Morning Show on 93.7 the Fan. “While he’s likely working hard to improve, right now he’s primarily focused on vertical routes. He needs to demonstrate proficiency across a wider range of routes—curls, comebacks, and the like—before I’m convinced he’s a true number-one receiver.”
Last year, Pickens showed improvement in several areas, particularly in creating separation from defenders. When given the opportunity to step up as the Steelers’ primary offensive option after Johnson’s departure, Pickens excelled. However, doubts remain within the Steelers’ ranks, leading to speculation about potentially acquiring Brandon Aiyuk and other top receivers.
As the focal point of the Steelers’ receiving corps this season, Pickens faces increased pressure. The team is looking to players like Van Jefferson, Roman Wilson, or Calvin Austin III to contribute alongside him, but Pickens must demonstrate consistency throughout the entire season to cement his status as the team’s top receiver.
If he succeeds, Pickens could be in line for a significant contract extension next offseason. His objective now is to prove himself during training camp and carry that momentum into the regular season, supported by quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.
