Heather Lyke, Director of Athletics at the University of Pittsburgh, announced today a contract extension for head men’s basketball coach Jeff Capel, securing his leadership of the Panthers through at least the 2029-30 season.
Lyke praised Capel’s commitment and vision since his arrival at Pitt in 2018, noting his dedication to rebuilding the program. She emphasized Capel’s role in establishing a strong foundation for Pitt basketball, positioning the team for future success. Lyke expressed confidence in Capel’s leadership both on and off the court, underscoring his value as a representative of the university.
Under Capel’s guidance over the last two seasons, Pitt has achieved 46 victories, including 26 in ACC competition, placing them fourth in the conference. Capel holds a record of 97-92 in his six-year tenure as head coach and was recognized as the ACC Coach of the Year in 2023, in addition to being a finalist for national coach of the year honors.
Capel expressed gratitude for the support from Chancellor Joan Gabel and Heather Lyke, highlighting their leadership at Pitt. He affirmed his commitment to building a competitive basketball program that contends for championships at the conference and national levels annually. Capel also praised the enthusiastic support from the Pittsburgh community and fans, pledging to represent Pitt with dedication both on the court and within the community.
Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Pitt retains key players such as Ishmael Leggett and Jaland Lowe, who were pivotal contributors last year. Leggett, named ACC Sixth Man of the Year, led the team in scoring and rebounding, while Lowe demonstrated strong performance during ACC play.
The Panthers have bolstered their roster with additions from the transfer portal, including Damian Dunn, a two-time All-AAC selection known for his scoring and all-around play, and rising junior Cameron Corhen, who brings experience and versatility.
