The New York Knicks have shown interest in Clint Capela, the center for the Atlanta Hawks, according to SNY’s Ian Begley, amidst ongoing speculation linking Capela to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Begley reported, “Clint Capela, Atlanta, was one big that the Knicks checked in on. I don’t know how far talks went. I don’t know if they’re active at this very moment. But they did check in on Capela.”
Begley also indicated that a potential trade package for Capela would likely involve Mitchell Robinson, as the Knicks aim to fill the void left by Isaiah Hartenstein’s departure to the Oklahoma City Thunder in free agency.
Capela, a seasoned player, averaged 11.5 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game last season. While his statistics have slightly declined in recent years, his defensive prowess and interior presence remain highly valued, particularly in New York’s search for a reliable big man.
As the Knicks contemplate a deal for Capela, reports suggest he is already “on the trade market” for Atlanta ahead of the upcoming 2024-25 season. In exchange, the Hawks could seek to acquire a talented player like Robinson or future draft picks if they pivot towards a rebuilding phase.
However, Robinson alone may not suffice for Atlanta to part with Capela, necessitating New York to assemble a substantial offer.
Capela could potentially serve as the missing piece for the Knicks, who aim to enhance their competitiveness following a strong season that fell short of championship contention. Making strategic moves before the new season begins could significantly bolster New York’s prospects of becoming a Finals contender.
