LSU redshirt freshman running back Trey Holly’s legal situation took an unexpected turn on Tuesday, raising doubts about his ability to return to the team for the start of the 2024 season.
Holly’s lawyer, Michael Small, revealed that the status hearing set for July 17th had been postponed to September 18th. This delay is a significant setback for Holly, who had been hoping to clear his name promptly and rejoin the football team.
Small explained that the postponement was requested by both the prosecutor and himself because the State had not yet provided the necessary discovery evidence as required by pretrial motions.
It appears unlikely that Holly will be permitted to rejoin the team before the September 18th hearing, unless head coach Brian Kelly decides otherwise before the legal proceedings commence.
Holly’s legal troubles originated from a February 9th incident at a Union Parish apartment complex in Farmerville, Louisiana. The incident, involving multiple shooters, left two people injured, one critically. Holly was subsequently arrested on February 15th and faced serious charges including attempted second-degree murder, aggravated criminal damage to property, and illegal use of a weapon.
In April, a grand jury dismissed the attempted second-degree murder charges against Holly, with the next step in the legal process originally scheduled for July 17th before the postponement was announced.
