The BYU football program’s 2024 roster has been updated to include several additions, notably Marquis Montgomery, a transfer from Cal. Montgomery’s presence is noteworthy as he was not listed on the media days roster the previous week.
At Cal, Montgomery played as a tight end, but he is now listed as a 6’4″, 220-pound wide receiver on BYU’s roster. He could potentially fill a role similar to Keanu Hill, who combines aspects of both tight end and wide receiver. However, Hill outweighs Montgomery by 20 pounds, likely influencing the decision to position Montgomery as a wide receiver. It’s important to note that when Montgomery was a highly sought-after recruit from Snow College, BYU had initially recruited him as a wide receiver.
During the upcoming season, Montgomery will wear jersey number 20 for BYU and has one season of eligibility remaining. At the very least, he will provide depth to BYU’s receiving corps.
Montgomery committed to BYU as a preferred walk-on just last month. Following his entry into the transfer portal this spring, Montgomery received offers from several schools, including Alabama, Colorado, San Jose State, and others. Despite these options, he chose to walk on at BYU for the 2024 season.
Montgomery has a longstanding relationship with BYU’s coaching staff dating back many years. Initially targeted by BYU in the 2023 recruiting class from Snow College, he was a highly sought-after recruit with over 40 scholarship offers from prominent programs such as USC, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Penn State. Ultimately, he committed to Cal but saw limited playing time in 2023, totaling 3 receptions for 31 yards before entering the transfer portal.
During his time at Snow College, BYU was a serious contender for Montgomery, where he made multiple visits, including attending games against East Carolina and Wyoming. Ultimately, an official visit to Cal persuaded him to commit to the Bears.
Montgomery, previously listed at 6’3″ and 230 pounds at Cal, arrives at BYU slightly lighter. His skill set, combining size and athleticism, was instrumental in making him a highly coveted recruit initially.
