San Diego Padres right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. informed reporters last Friday that the discomfort in his right leg has subsided. He expressed confidence in returning to the lineup at some point during this season.
The Padres are cautious about rushing Tatis back from his stress reaction in his right femur. Manager Mike Shildt acknowledged in an interview with Ben and Woods on 97.3-FM in San Diego that Tatis is “pain-free and recovering well.” Despite this positive progress, there is currently no set timetable for his return.
“The timetable is not set,” Shildt explained. “There’s a plan in place, but it’s not definitive at this moment. Like with Joe Musgrove, Fernando is still early in the recovery process. He will undergo further evaluation to gauge his progress relative to the baseline established three weeks ago. This assessment will happen soon, and decisions will follow based on that, similar to how we managed Bogey.”
In related news, San Diego Padres second baseman Luis Arráez will miss the 2024 MLB All-Star Game due to a thumb injury. Arráez was selected as part of the National League bench but opted to sit out to allow his thumb to heal following an injury sustained while sliding into third base during a game against the Washington Nationals in June.
Despite missing the game, Arráez plans to attend with his family at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. This marks the third consecutive All-Star appearance for Arráez, who joined the Padres in a trade from the Miami Marlins in early May and has continued to perform at an All-Star level.
He currently boasts a .315/.340/.381 slash line with two home runs and 19 RBIs, ranking fifth in MLB in batting average. Arráez recently came off a strong performance, recording three hits in a game against the Atlanta Braves. While he is not expected to miss additional games with the team, Arráez is using the All-Star Break to maximize his recovery time before the Padres resume play on Friday against the Cleveland Guardians.
