Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson, who were drafted together by the Baltimore Orioles in 2019, have been selected to represent their team in the 2024 MLB All-Star Game.
The starting lineups for both the American and National Leagues were announced on July 3rd. Henderson, the Orioles’ shortstop, becomes the first to receive this honor since Manny Machado in 2018. Reflecting on the achievement, Henderson expressed gratitude and excitement, describing it as a humbling experience given that this is only his second full year in the league.
For Henderson, being selected alongside Rutschman holds special meaning, as they have developed a close friendship since their days as roommates in the minors. Rutschman, drafted first overall in the same draft that Henderson was 42nd, echoed the sentiment of pride and excitement about being named a starter alongside his teammate.
This marks the first time since 2014 that Baltimore has had multiple starters in the All-Star Game. Henderson acknowledged that the recognition underscores the hard work not only of himself but also of the coaches and development staff who have supported his progress.
In the 2024 season, Henderson has posted impressive stats with a .288 batting average, .383 on-base percentage, .600 slugging percentage, 26 home runs, and 58 RBIs. Rutschman, meanwhile, becomes the first Orioles catcher since Matt Wieters in 2014 to be named an All-Star Game starter. Both players expressed mutual admiration for each other’s accomplishments, with Rutschman noting the significance of sharing this experience with Henderson, whom he praised for his impressive growth and dedication.
