The Chicago Cubs are quickly shifting from contenders to potential sellers as the trade deadline approaches. Despite a strong start to the season, their recent performance has deteriorated. Jed Hoyer, expressing dissatisfaction with the team’s current state, has hinted at the possibility of trading players if their fortunes don’t improve soon.
One player drawing significant interest is second baseman Nico Hoerner. Reports suggest he could be on the market, particularly with the Seattle Mariners mentioned as potential trade partners. MLB insider Jon Morosi has indicated that Hoerner might fit well with the Mariners.
Morosi commented on the potential trade partnership, noting, “When a high-payroll team like the Cubs underperforms, they have to consider all options. That’s why a trade between the Cubs and Mariners makes sense now more than it might have a few months ago.”
Hoerner, despite a somewhat less productive season in 2024 with a .248/.334/.348 batting line, has demonstrated strong defensive skills, even earning a Gold Glove. He’s contributed four home runs and 21 RBI so far this year. In contrast, his 2023 season saw better offensive output with a .283/.346/.383 line, along with nine home runs and 68 RBI. Additionally, Hoerner has showcased his speed, stealing 14 bases this season while being caught only twice.
