Following a Milwaukee Brewers home loss to the Chicago Cubs, the situation took a turn for the worse for 11 fans on Saturday.
An escalator malfunction occurred at American Family Field after the game, resulting in injuries for nearly a dozen individuals, with six requiring hospitalization for non-life-threatening injuries, as confirmed by the Brewers in a statement:
“After today’s game, an escalator at American Family Field malfunctioned while moving fans from the Terrace to Loge Level, causing an increase in downward speed. Eleven people sustained injuries during the incident, with five receiving treatment at the ballpark and six others taken to nearby hospitals. Our onsite physician and EMS responded promptly, and we are grateful for their swift actions.”
Among those injured was Greg Braggs Jr., a CHGO Sports producer, who described the scene as chaotic, with the escalator malfunctioning while over 100 people were on it. Braggs suggested that the Brewers may have been at fault for allowing too many individuals onto the escalator.
Prior to the escalator incident, the Brewers suffered a 5-3 loss to the Cubs, highlighted by Chicago outfielder Ian Happ’s two-run homer in the eighth inning, which broke a 3-3 tie. The defeat ended a five-game winning streak for the Brewers, who still maintain a 6.5-game lead over the Cubs in the NL Central.
