3-Star Prospect And Timpview Standout Linebacker, Commits To BYU Football Over…

On Monday, Taani Makasini, a standout linebacker from Timpview High School, committed to BYU and their linebackers coach Justin Ena. Makasini chose BYU over offers from Tennessee, Utah, Cal, Oregon State, and Washington State. He is ranked as one of the top 10 prospects in Utah for the class of 2025 according to 247Sports.

Makasini received his first scholarship offer from the University of Utah on October 17th. The same day, BYU’s Justin Ena also extended an offer, followed by an offer from Washington State later on. This sudden interest led to Makasini quickly gaining three offers in one day.

Two weeks later, Tennessee offered him a scholarship, but then there was a lull in offers until Cal and Oregon State extended theirs in January and February.

BYU’s consistent recruiting efforts, aided by Makasini’s family ties—his older brother Sonny plays for BYU—ultimately paid off with his commitment. Sonny Makasini, an offensive lineman, is entering his third year with BYU’s football program in 2024 and is vying for a starting guard position.

Standing at 6’2″ and 190 pounds, Taani Makasini is a highly regarded linebacker prospect known for his strong play against the run, adeptness in coverage, and ability to make interceptions. He transitioned to linebacker during his junior year at Timpview after playing running back and safety. His speed and skills make him a promising candidate to excel at the collegiate level and beyond.
