The Miami football program secured a significant commitment for the 2025 class from four-star cornerback Chris Ewald on Thursday evening. Ewald, from Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna, ranks 169th overall, 21st among cornerbacks, and 24th in Florida for his class.
Among Miami’s 2025 recruits, only tight end Brock Schott and running back Girard Pringle Jr. hold higher national rankings than Ewald. His commitment is crucial for head coach Mario Cristobal, co-defensive coordinators Lance Guidry and Derek Nicholson, and newly appointed secondary coach Chevis Jackson.
Jackson spearheaded Ewald’s recruitment after joining Miami from Marshall in the 2024 offseason. Ewald becomes the second cornerback and third defensive back to commit to Miami for 2025, joining safety Amari Wallace and cornerback Timothy Merritt.
With Ewald’s commitment, Miami’s 2025 recruiting class climbs to 17th in national rankings. Prior to the recent influx of commitments, Miami’s class was ranked in the 40s by the 247Sports composite rankings. The emphasis on cornerbacks is evident in Miami’s recruiting strategy, with Ewald and Merritt among the 10 cornerbacks who took official visits to Miami in June.
Ewald opted for Miami over Georgia, despite visiting the Bulldogs officially last weekend. Miami emerged as the frontrunner for Ewald shortly after he withdrew his commitment from Michigan in January, although some recruiting sources noted Georgia was making a late effort to secure his commitment.
Miami’s depth and experience at cornerback for the 2025 season are limited. Sophomore Damari Brown may be in his final season at Miami in 2025, coinciding with Ewald’s freshman year, as Brown will be eligible for the 2026 NFL Draft. Ewald is anticipated to be one of the highest-rated cornerbacks on Miami’s 2025 roster.
