The North Carolina Tar Heels’ baseball season concluded disappointingly with a defeat against Florida State in the College World Series. Despite a 1-2 record in Omaha, the season overall was deemed a success.
UNC experienced a notable comeback victory over Long Island and later triumphed over LSU in a decisive game 7 during the regional round. They further solidified their journey by sweeping West Virginia in the super regional, securing their spot in the College World Series.
A significant factor in their success was the performance of their freshman class. Now, two players from UNC have received recognition with an invitation to try out for Team USA.
On Friday, the Tar Heels announced that pitcher Jason DeCaro and catcher Luke Stevenson had earned invitations to the 2024 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp. They are among the 56 players selected from non-draft-eligible college players to participate in a two-game Stars vs. Stripes intrasquad series in Cary, N.C., scheduled for June 26 and 27.
During his debut season, DeCaro impressed enough to earn Second Team All-ACC honors with a 3.81 ERA in conference play. His teammate, Stevenson, was recognized with All-ACC Third Team accolades and a position on the All-Freshman team. Stevenson started in 63 out of 64 games, boasting a batting average of .284 along with 14 home runs and 58 RBIs.
