The Green Bay Packers have faced difficult decisions regarding their running backs multiple times in recent years. In 2020, they drafted AJ Dillon in the second round of the NFL Draft, signaling that either Jamaal Williams or Aaron Jones, both beloved running backs, was entering their final season with the team.
After a peculiar year affected by COVID-19, the Packers opted to re-sign Jones and let Williams depart in free agency. Both running backs were drafted by Green Bay in the 2017 NFL Draft. While Jones remained with the Packers, Williams moved on to join the Detroit Lions.
This offseason, it was Jones’ turn to part ways with the team that drafted him. Following Green Bay’s signing of free agent running back Josh Jacobs, Jones was released and subsequently signed with the Minnesota Vikings.
Williams recently appeared on the NFL Network to discuss the Saints and share his perspective on Alvin Kamara’s holdout. He was also asked about Jones leaving the Packers and offered his thoughts:
“You know, he’s got that chip on his shoulder, that motivation. It’s a good one to have too. As for me, I didn’t really think about it until I stepped onto the field, except for that last game at Lambeau, running out of the tunnel felt like coming full circle for me. But Aaron, he’s got it. He’s a great veteran, always learning, not too proud to learn from others. He’s learned a lot and he’s going to keep being a professional.”
Williams also playfully expressed some envy that Jones was joining a team that had just unveiled all-white uniforms. He joked that every time he leaves a team, they end up getting all-white uniforms afterward, and he really wants to wear them himself.
