Gauff is currently competing in the Berlin Ladies Open and secured a spot in the quarterfinals by defeating Alexandrova in the round of 16 on Thursday, winning 7-6, 6-2.
This victory was particularly satisfying for the current world number two, as Alexandrova had previously defeated her in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0, in the same tournament in 2023.
When asked after the match if last year’s result had been on her mind during the contest, Gauff responded humorously, asking, “I played her here last year?” When reminded that she had indeed lost, Gauff jokingly claimed, “Oh, I don’t remember.”
Looking ahead, Gauff aims to progress further in the tournament to fine-tune her preparations for the upcoming third Grand Slam of the year, Wimbledon 2024, beginning on July 1st, where players worldwide will compete for the prestigious title.
Gauff entered the Berlin Open on the heels of a strong showing at the French Open, reaching the semifinals before falling to Poland’s Iga Swiatek, the current world number one, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Next, Gauff will face Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in the quarterfinals, who advanced after defeating Linda Noskova 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 in the round of 16. This upcoming match will mark the eighth encounter between Gauff and Jabeur in professional tennis.
