The Citadel has chosen Russell Triplett, a former standout at Clemson University, to lead its baseball program in an effort to revive its once-renowned status. The military school announced on Wednesday that Triplett, currently the head coach at Newberry College where he has achieved the most wins in the Division II school’s history with a record of 418-278-1 (.599 winning percentage), will take over from Tony Skole as the Bulldogs’ new coach.

Triplett, who completed his 14th season at Newberry, previously served as an assistant coach at Clemson and USC Upstate before becoming head coach at Newberry in May 2010.

Reflecting on his appointment, Triplett expressed his excitement, describing the opportunity to lead a program with such rich history and tradition as The Citadel as a lifelong dream fulfilled. He credited The Citadel’s president, Gen. Walters, Director of Athletics Mike Capaccio, and the entire search committee for their confidence in his background, experience, and vision.

“The Citadel is recognized as a significant institution within the college baseball community, and my family and I are excited to immerse ourselves in the distinctive culture and committed alumni network that make this school outstanding.”

In his 14-year tenure at Newberry, Triplett has guided the Wolves to two South Atlantic Conference titles, earning NCAA Tournament berths on both occasions and hosting NCAA regionals each time. He was also honored as SAC Coach of the Year in 2015, 2019, and 2023.
